The green building approach offers tremendous opportunities to significantly reduce environmental impacts of buildings while producing healthier indoor environments and lower operating costs. Green buildings use an integrated design approach to create buildings that are resource-efficient, environmentally sound, and fiscally responsible. The green building approach extends into the community by considering issues such as access to public transportation, historic preservation, density, and other components supporting quality growth.

The green building approach builds on the synergistic effects of various elements of building design to produce a design that greatly improves energy efficiency while minimizing a building’s impact on the environment. Because the elements of green building design are all interwoven, the decision to utilize this approach should be made at the beginning of the design process.

The true financial benefits of green building design are realized through life-cycle cost analysis. While savings such as energy costs can be relatively simple to calculate, quantification of other (perhaps more valuable) benefits such as worker productivity and health, can be more complex.
