VALDOSTA STATE UNIVERSITY - STUDENT HEALTH CENTER
Valdosta, Georgia
Size: 27,000 square footValdosta, Georgia
Construction cost: $7.2 million
With the student population increasing dramatically, Valdosta State University looked to replace its aging and outdated student health center with a new state-of-the-art facility. The funding for this project, and several others, is a public / private venture between the Board of Regents and the Valdosta State University Foundation.
Accelerated Schedule: With the bond issue date driving the schedule, the University selected Lott + Barber to design the new facility. Using Revit, a Building Information Modeling software by Autodesk, Lott + Barber met with the building committee every two weeks to accelerate the design. The BIM software allowed the architect to better communicate the design with the committee, allowing the members to make quicker and better informed decisions during the design process. Design for this facility began on April 26, 2007 and completed Construction Documents were delivered on schedule on August 31, 2007, a four month time frame.
The building features a two-story lobby and waiting room, 18 exam rooms, 5 provider offices, 3 nurses stations, 2 observation rooms, a procedure room, pharmacy, clinical lab, radiology suite, staff support, administration suite, and two shelled spaces for future physician offices.
The site work included a new parking lot with a pedestrian connection to the historic neighborhood and an entrance plaza which will provide a formal connection to the University’s main pedestrian campus. The exterior design is in keeping with the Spanish mission style of the campus, with brick base, stucco, both arched and punched window openings, exposed wood brackets, and rafter tails and clay tile roof.
