UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA
MARY KAHRS WARNELL FOREST RESOURCE EDUCATION CENTER
Effingham County, Georgia

Size: 2,883 square feet
Construction Cost: $904,454

The University of Georgia requested the Architect to create an education facility with the primary focus on the exhibit and classroom space. The Owner also wanted to use wood species indigenous to Georgia, especially Southern Yellow Pine. The site chosen was once an old homestead which had a dozen 60 to 100 year old majestic live oaks and surrounding forest species.

Drawing from the basic form of Southern Yellow Pine trees, heavy timber columns were designed to resemble these trees. Roof forms were kept to basic gable forms. A raw galvalume metal roof was used to resemble the vernacular tin roof found on many buildings in this region.

Renovations include complete interior demolition of the existing administration and circulation with all new systems throughout; complete renovation of the existing campus shop and expansion into vacated adjacent suite; complete renovation of the existing cosmetology suite incorporating a dedicated classroom; and renovation of the existing 7,000-square foot auditorium, removing the sloped stadium type floor and fixed seating and handicap ramp, allowing more flexibility for this space. Work also includes a new fixed stage and exterior vestibule addition.
